Crazy Golf without the Windmills
Whilst all golf courses must follow certain guidelines – 18 holes, that sort of thing – the art of course design is all in the imagination.
What would work best where? How best to balance ‘challenging’ with not-completely-soul-destroying?
It’s that imagination that makes every course different – and makes the best courses things of beauty (and occasional horrors).
Sometimes, however, things get a little OTT. And the results can make for some pretty crazy golf, without the need for any miniature windmills.
Last year, Golf Punk magazine rounded up the five most bonkers courses in the world. Feel free to take as much inspiration as you like…
Most Volcanic Golf Course in the World
It’s a conventional-enough course in terms of fairways, greens, yardage etc. Only it’s situated on the rim of an active volcano.
Coldest Golf Course in the World
That’s right, Greenland – where it is famously not green at all. This is a course made mainly of snow and ice, with polar bears occasionally wandering across your line.
Longest Golf Course in the World
It can be hard fitting a round of golf into your schedule; you need to find four or five hours from somewhere. Or, if you’re playing, Nullarbor, four days. That’s because it’s 848 miles long and stretches across two time zones. It is, however, a pretty standard par 72 – the distances are between holes.
Highest Golf Course in the World
Government Golf Course, India
Want to put some distance on your drive? Try the Government Golf Course in Gulmarg. It’s the highest in the world, at over 8,500 feet above sea level, and that thin air’s got to be worth a few more yards.
Most Dangerous Golf Course in the World
Panmunjom, South Korea
But only just South. This course is perilously close to North Korea – and the most heavily fortified border in the world. ‘Course’ is actually a bit of an exaggeration as it’s actually only one par three hole. The key is to be straight off the tee – because left and right of the fairway it’s not the rough you want to worry about, it’s the landmines.
